Leeward's History

When Geoff was a kid his father, Charles Le Boutillier, renowned American poodle breeder, was dedicated not only to producing the perfect looking dog for the show ring, but also to get poodles recognized as a sporting breed, their true  calling – hunters, retrievers, and water dogs.

Back in the '50s at their kennel, Stonewood, in Baltimore, Maryland, the LeBoutillier family might have forty or fifty poodles at any one time. Everybody in the family had at least one, some two or three. When Geoff brought Jan home to meet the family forty years ago, there were twelve living in the house! It’s a wonder their marriage lasted.

To coin a phrase, the poodle didn't fall far from the tree. When Geoff and Jan had their first puppy back in 2005, Geoff's sister, Kate, suggested with a smile that they call it Slippery Slope. History is repeating itself, but this time with considerably more restraint.

This website is dedicated to Geoff and Jan's Nova Scotia-based kennel, Leeward Standard Poodles, founded in 2003. Registered with the Canadian Kennel Club, and offering fully tested, vaccinated, exceptional dogs. Once a year we breed one litter. Why?  Because we love the breed.  They renew our spirits and fill us with joy.
